Locum Tenens Radiology work in Victoria

Who are we?

VRCI is a radiology group who provide Radiology and Nuclear Medicine services with multiple partner organizations in the Greater Victoria area, including Island Health, BC Cancer and West Coast Medical Imaging.

Our clinical team consists of 25 partners, 2 emeritus senior associates, and 2 junior associates. Our referral base exceeds 800,000 people, and we provide all the diagnostic imaging services for the greater Victoria area in British Columbia, Canada. This includes image interpretation and image guided interventional procedures at 6 Island Health sites, 2 private imaging facilities, and BCCA Victoria.

Why locum with us?

Looking to spend a few weeks in Victoria this summer with your family?

Are you new to practice and looking to try out a few places for a few weeks or months before settling down in a more long term arrangement?

Thinking about retiring in Victoria, and wondering if you could pick up some occasional work here out of interest, or to make a more gradual transition to retirement?

What are the expectations of a locum radiologist?

All successful candidates must have:

  • FRCPC Certification in Diagnostic Radiology
  • Eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC

Prospective radiologists should be comfortable with:

  • General Radiology
  • Ultrasound
  • CT
  • MRI

Basic procedural competence in non-vascular image guided interventions is essential for most of our clinical rotations.

Scope of procedural skills expected of a general radiologist (some of these could be retrained on site):

  • Ultrasound guided biopsies and drainages
  • CT guided soft tissue biopsies and drainages
  • CT guided lung biopsy
  • Basic MSK Fluoroscopic Interventions
  • Hysterosalpingograms
  • Basic GI Fluoroscopy

Modifications to procedure schedules will be considered on a first time locum if the candidate is seeking to test out our practice before applying to our group for a partner track or preferred contractor arrangement, with the understanding they would be expected to retrain in some of these skills on the job in the event of a long term working arrangement.

Work expectations:

  • Short term locums only cover daytime shifts at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital appropriate to their scope of practice
  • Long term locum tenens may cover a wider variety of shifts

Subspecialty Considerations:

Candidates with subspecialty fellowship training are preferred, however experienced general radiology candidates without fellowship training may be considered.

If you are a new grad looking to locum before OR during fellowship, we would also consider a short term arrangement of either 1-2 weeks or up to 3 months for appropriate candidates.

Most of our rotations are intended to be staffed by a general radiologist.

Four exceptions to general staffing on locum shifts:

Vascular Interventional Radiology: Vascular intervention caseload for locums is usually discussed in advance of short term locum tenens, please contact our IR medical lead Dr. Vamshi Kotha for further details if you are considering an IR locum.

Breast Imaging: Because of credentialing requirements, short term locum tenens are usually not on-boarded as screeners. Diagnostic breast imaging and intervention is a possibility for locum-tenens work.

General Nuclear Medicine: Local credentialing requires any locums on this rotation to be FRCPC certified in both Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, please contact Dr. James Curtis for more details if interested.

PET-CT: Credentialing has provincial oversight and short term locums are not being offered at this time. If you are interested in a long term locum with our group including PET-CT, contact Dr. James Curtis. Again, only candidates FRCPC certified in both Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine would be considered at this time. Those with limited training in only Nuclear Medicine are not being considered at this time.

Compensation

Locum rates vary based on experience and skillset of candidates, to be discussed with our scheduler/recruiter.

Long term preferred contractor arrangements may also be considered for some candidates after a positive short term locum experience, at rates to be negotiated.

How to apply?

Our recruitment committee is headed by Dr. Stuart Silver.

You can contact him directly for general inquiries.

We also have a short Locum Availability Form , that will help us sort out what rotations we are able to staff you on and match up availabilities.
